Continuity clinic is the heart of family medicine training. Each resident is the primary care physician for their own panel of patients and their first clinical point of contact for all three years: patient questions, results, needs between visits, and coordination of care. As residents progress, the number of clinic half days grows with the panel and with the responsibility.

The clinic is organized into four resident pods: Green, Blue, Orange and Platinum. Residents join a pod at the start of residency and stay with the same medical assistants, nurses and clinic staff for all three years.

Residents start slowly. The intro to residency block is for learning the electronic medical record, the clinic workflows, and the systems and people around you. Patient volume then rises step by step, so residents build confidence and their own way of working.

In PGY-2 and PGY-3, residents also spend one half day a week in a continuity clinic at the Roseburg VA, caring for their own panel of veterans.

Patients per half day

  • Intro block: 2 to 4

  • PGY-1: 4 to 6, rising over the year

  • PGY-2: 7 to 8

  • PGY-3: 9
